Building Classroom Community: Back to School in the Classroom

Happy back to school season! Made For Me Literacy is back at it again with another bundle, and this one is created with third through fifth graders in self contained special education classrooms in mind. We are so excited to get these units into your classrooms! We figured, what better unit to kick off the school year than “Building Classroom Community.”

As you know, our mission behind Made For Me Literacy is to provide teachers with engaging, comprehensive reading units that are EASY to implement. We did all the leg work so you can have fun with your students while they are learning a ton! If you are new to Made For Me Literacy, and want to get some background info, check out this post and this post

Made For Me Literacy Classroom Community Unit

Great ready, this unit is full of activities to do with your special education students. Whether you are a 3rd-5th grade special education teacher, you are a K-2 regular ed teacher, or if you teach K-2 special education resource/self-contained and you feel like your students need a bump up in higher level skills, we’ve incorporated so much differentiation, there is something for everyone.

As always, our Classroom Community unit comes with 4 full weeks of instruction and a curriculum map that guides you through what to do each day. We incorporate tons of different anchor charts, crafts, writing activities, class graphs, science experiments, centers, and visual recipes for snacks and sensory activities into the month to keep students engaged and excited about learning.

Classroom Community Literacy Themes and Story Time Lessons

Each month, we break down the main theme into four sub-themes. For the Classroom Community unit, our weekly themes are building classroom community, being proud of who you are, embracing our differences, and how to be a kind kid. In every unit, we cover two picture books, one non-fiction text written by team Made For Me Literacy, and leveled readers with running records and an assessment. All story time weeks include comprehension activities, graphic organizers, boom cards, and a story map to go along with the fiction and nonfiction texts.

Classroom Community Activities

To keep students on their toes and engaged, there are 20 hands-on daily activities to do with your students during your literacy block. These include class graphs, journal writing pages, anchor charts with printable versions, bulletin boards, crafts with writing activities, and visual recipes for fun Friday activities. All anchor charts included in our Made For Me Literacy Units are available in a digital format using Google slides, so you will always have a no prep option if you prefer the digital version.

Classroom Community Centers, Boom Cards,

and No Prep Skill Practice Activities

For your literacy and math rotations, our centers cover literacy, math, vocabulary, and the cross-curriculum theme for each month. There are 12 print and prep centers of your favorites (think task boxes, file folders, sorting activities, vocabulary, flip-and-write books). Each of these centers comes with an expansion activity already included. We also include 8 DIGITAL centers that can be accessed on any device (printable version, interactive version, and Boom Cards versions ALL included!). For no prep options, there are 16 print and go practice sheets included that are perfect for reinforcing skills covered in the unit.
