Below are the books we will be reading for our winter unit in January. Winter and snow are such fun topics to cover!
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

This adorable little story follows a boy on a snow day. He wakes up, excited to see all the snow outside, gets dressed, and plays all day in the snow! This book is a great for discussing what we wear in the winter and activities we can do in the snow.
Bear Snores On by KarmaWilson
I have fallen in love with the Bear books! This one in particular would be perfect for introducing hibernation in a science lesson. Follow along as all the animals take shelter in Bear’s cave while he sleeps through the entire thing. When he finally awakes at the end of the story, they all have a party!
There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow by Lucille Colander
The old lady books are a favorite in our classroom. They are so silly and perfect for sequencing practice! This crazy old lady eats snow, along with a bunch of other crazy things, in this story. At the end of the book, you’ll see why!
Sneezy the Snowman by Maureen Wright

Oh, Sneezy…. you’ll never learn. In this book, the Sneezy is so cold and makes the silliest requests for items like hot cocoa that make him melt into a puddle. It’s great for teaching cause/effect!
Snowmen at Night by Carolyn Buehner
This book has beautiful illustrations and is such a fun read! Follow along as you discover that snowmen sip ice-cold cocoa, play games, and have a blast while we sleep!
The Mitten by Jan Brett
I used this book in one of the very first lessons I taught during my first student teaching rotation. It’s such a classic book and perfect for our kiddos. All the animals try to fit into one mitten and eventually they all fall out. Perfect for sequencing and learning about winter animals.
We will be using these 6 books to work on our story map and comprehension skills during story time.  After we read the story through once, we go through the book page by page to discuss story elements such as character, setting, and the sequence of the story. I use the visuals from my story time packs to aide the students when we are working on the story map. After we fill out the story map, I pull up the questions from the pack and students take turns looking back in the book and answering the questions by using the picture answer choices. Below is an example from one of our fall reads.
